Ensure IAM password policy prevents password reuse

Preventing password reuse increases account protection by ensuring users cannot cycle through a small set of passwords. AWS supports remembering the last 24 passwords.

Security Impact

Password reuse allows credential stuffing attacks to succeed if old passwords were compromised.

How to Remediate

Set IAM password policy to remember and prevent reuse of at least 24 previous passwords. Use AWS CLI: aws iam update-account-password-policy --password-reuse-prevention 24
