Ensure S3 bucket has server-side encryption enabled

Server-side encryption protects data at rest in S3 buckets. AWS offers SSE-S3 (AES-256), SSE-KMS (customer managed keys), and SSE-C (customer-provided keys).

Security Impact

Unencrypted data at rest is vulnerable if storage media is compromised, stolen, or improperly disposed.

How to Remediate

Enable default encryption on the bucket using SSE-S3 or SSE-KMS. For sensitive data, use SSE-KMS with a customer managed key for additional access controls.
